it wasn't the best day of his life at shady lane....which included every day since his birth. he sighed and picked up the cowboy hat before he stepped out the door of his small house. he was headed to see his friend and his horse, hero song. the liver chestnut marwari was a unique specimen with the tell-tale inward pointing ears. as he slipped into his ford, thoughts of how the rest of the day might come out. had it be, it woud probably end up just as miserably as it had started. how wonderful. he had woken up to get to work late. after being yelled at by his unfair employer, as he had never come in late for work before, he came home to find that his dryer and washer weren't working....so he had wet clothes on his hands and no way to wash or dry them.
he sighed and then drove his big truck the few miles down the road to get to the ranch. getting out, he pushed down his white hat further down on his had, and headed towards the barn in his black t-shirt and his wrangler jeans. he looked like a plain country boy. well, he had lived here all his life. that's what he was. coming up to the barn, he noticed the quiet. guess most of the horses were out. it was like four o' clock in the afternoon anyways. going down the aisle, he found a familiar noble head hanging over the half-door and those melting mocha colored eyes gazing at him fondly. he chuckled at the gelding. "howdy! what's up, my hero?" the gelding whinnied loudly as his owner came up to him.
smiling widely, opened the stall door, grabbed the halter and lead the sixteen hand gleaming horse out of his box. his voice softened as hero nudged his master gently. a hand reached up to stroke his nose. "hey now...surely you didn't miss me that much." he chuckled and then took hero to the cross-ties. they were going for a ride. he went to the tack room, grabbing the needed items and headed back to his horse. hero was looking at him expectantly. oh, how he loved these rides! he loved them, he loved them, he loved them! he whickered softly at river, who burst into laughter. "yeah, i know. you got lots o' energy!" then, he put the saddle pad on, followed by the saddle, and then the bridle slipping over the halter.
having the beautiful gelding out of the cross-ties, river mounted him and then gathered the reins in his right hand, his left laying on hero's neck. "atta boy. let's go." he clicked his tongue twice, and hero went into a trot out of the barn. they went the half-mile from the barn to the race track in a reasonable amount of time. marwari's weren't racehorses, but hero loved to run, even if he wasn't exactly built for speed. getting on the race track, hero got excited and went into a gallop right away. but river was a better rider than most. with his firm grip, he held on to his running gelding.

GAVE INTO LOVE & WATCHED THE BITTERNESS BURN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -It had been reasonably early when Lauren had arrived here. With having been off from work, she decided to pay a visit to her blood bay Thoroughbred. Of course, he was over-joyed and left behind the stallions he had been bossing around to greet her. He was a little confused when she came. Usually she arrived later than ten o’clock in the morning, but as the day progressed all that had been forgotten. Lauren spent her time bonding with Doctor Love by playing their favorite game. Tag. Both of them would go running up and down the pasture for hours, laughing and sweating until they were worn out, but begging for more. Naturally, Doctor won, but Lauren usually let him win… Okay, not really, but she can dream, can’t she? With Doctor’s score gaining quickly in success, Lauren flopped lazily in the grass. Doctor trotted up and blew in her face. She jumped up, and he squealed and trotted off a few feet before galloping her way. Mock fear crossed her face, and Lauren bolted away. She was a robber on the run, and Doctor was the ever speedy cop. Another game they called Cops and Robbers. Lauren looked over her shoulder, her blond hair flowing behind her as she pleaded falsely. I’m sorry, officer! That bracelet was just too pretty to be left at the store! Doctor would reply with a snort and a stomp of his hoof, and Lauren would walk behind him with her head lowered in shame. But that was earlier today. Now having gotten to roughly about four o’clock, Lauren sat down in the pasture, plucking the grass and tossing them at her three year old stallion.
The lying stallion snorted and pulled the grass, attempting time and time again to get his sweet revenge but failed miserably. He would make a weird snorting noise that sounded like a squeal, but the grass went nowhere. Lauren laughed for a good ten minutes before collecting her composure. After tossing a few more stalks of grass at his blood bay hide, she stood up suddenly and offered up the grand idea of going for a run. Doctor was more than thrilled, and eagerly followed Lauren to the gate where she clipped the lead rope and led him to the cross-ties. It felt a little weird to be here almost all day, but it also felt nice. It was quiet, and it was different from the bustling crowds that she found in the morning. With her tan riding breeches and her white tight t-shirt in place, Lauren left Doctor behind. He gave his loud snorts of complaints whilst she balanced Doctor’s racing tack. After having him tacked up, Doctor pricked his ears forwards. It had been awhile since he was allowed to gallop to his hearts full content. Dressage helped him with his footing on the track, but to be honest, he was getting sick of English riding. So, with this new opportunity thrown his way, he was ecstatic. As was Lauren. Lauren grinned, and mounted from a mounting block. Her legs adjusted quickly to the familiar shortened stirrups. She pulled up her blond wavy hair before putting on her helmet. With a click of her tongue, Doctor strode out arrogantly. His ears pricked forwards in anticipation as they took the short distance to the track.
A few feet away from the track, and Doctor was already prancing and pulling at the bit. Lauren tugged back, and as soon as Doctor’s hooves caressed the dirt track, he took off at a gallop. His speed picked up, and Lauren expertly rose out of the saddle. The wind stung her eyes, creating a few tears to stream down her face. She was close to Doctor’s whipping black mane as his speed never diminished but rather continued to pick up speed. His strides lengthened, and he progressed around the track as if he had been doing this his entire life. Sure he may have been at the young age of three, but Doctor was damn good. The sound of hooves diverted Lauren’s attention which was an amateur move on her part, she would admit that. Doctor halted immediately, his hind legs sinking into the dirt, and allowing it to spew out from underneath his muscular legs. Lauren squealed, and went flying a few feet in front of her now angered stallion. The force of her impact caused a muffled and sickly thud. She quickly stood up and was a little disoriented. She ignored the man on his horse, and focused on Doctor who was whickering angrily. There was another horse on what he thought was his track. Lauren’s eyes which were green today sparked with little anger. Doctor rose onto his hind legs, whinnying loudly. His whinny echoed around her, and Lauren was grateful for wearing her helmet. Otherwise, she would have definitely gotten a concussion. With raised hands, she called out to her possessive stallion. Doctor! She snapped and his attention wheeled around to Lauren. His nostrils flared and his once adoring and gentle brown eyes sparked with a passionate and blazing fire. He tossed his head, the reins making metallic noises that were gentle. He snorted, pawing the surface of the track. You pay them no mind. This is not you track, you hear me? Slowly she walked up to him, hands raised as if she were a criminal on the run. Doctor backed up a little from her, whickering angrily. He was a familiar stranger to Lauren now, but she struggled to break through to him.
Doctor’s gaze then fell to her dirtied arms that were slightly bleeding from hitting the surface of the track. The angry flame in his eyes slowly cooled, and he wandered forwards slowly but stopped. Lauren shook her head gently, trying to clear her blurry eyesight met him halfway, and he nickered quietly. Immediately, remorse flooded his expressive brown eyes and he pressed his muzzle lightly against her toned dancer’s body before pressing itself against her fresh wounds. Lauren winced visibly, and Doctor nickered mournfully. She said nothing but merely gathered his reins and re-mounted her 16.3 hand high stallion, moving him away from the duo.

Gate practice. What fun, yet the starting gates were not a problem. London, was eager to get her butt into gear. There were horses running out there. Horses racing. But she was here, training. Ira was pushing her hard now. After his loss at the Breeder's Cup. Even though second place wasn't bad. She had worked hard to get second, but the bay stallion had won. She blamed hormones. Mares rule! In her opinion of course.
Why couldn't she have some fun? She whinned at Ira. The young jockey sighed "I want to run, too. Once we're done training we'll go find someone to race." Quick races were always a good run. And speed training, too. Very much. Ira looked over to his agent "I'm going to take a break." he called, and. With that he gave the mare her head and they took off through the open gate. It looked so practiced. He made it look easy. He professionally went into a Jockey position. They moved like an arrow on the dirt track. On the far end, near the Home streach stood two horses and their riders. Ira smiled.
They went around the far turn and raced at top speed toward the two horses. London's legs moving beautifuly and powerfuly. The champion mare was known for that. She was also known for wuick stops, being a barrel horse too.
She slid to an imediate stop next to the blood bay stallion and gelding that wasn't a thorooughbred. London ad only seen those of her own breed on the track. She trotted up to the gelding. Sniffed him once. Her ears faced the stallion, the one going the OTHER WAY!
She turned tail and cantered toward the stallion. Ira laughed full heartedly "Make your pick, London." a whinny followed the comment. She was going to follow the stallion. She was going to race the stallion, she was going to win! She came up beside him and nickered quietly. She then leaned against him only to be pulled away by Ira. She whickered in protest, swishing her tail. Ira took off his helmet and looked at the girl beside him "I'm sorry about London, she can be a bit....crazy."
The mare lowered her head contentedly. Happy at her walk. Ira looked back at the gelding. What was he doing out on a race track. Maybe just to run. There's no way his horse could race against a thoroughbred. London lifted her head and whinned at Ira's agent who jogged out onto the track. Ira hissed something under his breath
"Ira! This is no time for games. If you're going to get into the Breeder's Cup again you're going to have to whip your mare into shape." he growled. "Oh C'mon, sir. A little fun won't hurt." The old man narrowed his eyes "Fine. You can have the rest of the day off, but we begin training tomorrow moning at five." with that he walked away. Ira gropped the reins tight "Soon, London. Besides. A champion like you deserves her time off." he gave her shoulder a few good pats. She was his favourite of all the horses he'd ever ridden. Weather they be his own or someone elses.
She won the Kentucky Derby. And she raced her heart out in the Breeder's Cup. He thought back to Church hill downs. That day he won. All the way to the day he lost, second place! Damn.
He looked back the woman on the stallion "I'm sorry if I seem distracted." he mumbled

hero responded negatively to the blood bay stallion's attitude towards him. even though hero was most definitely a gelding, he acted just like a stallion. it was due to the fact that he was castrated after he figured out he was a stallion. so, he acted like a hot-blooded stallion when it came to other stallions. he neighed angrily, a snort coming from within his nares. river looked at her, seeing her get hurt. he wanted to know if she was okay. his country boy nature was to help those in need...it was just the way he was raised. so, he reprimanded his marwari gelding, hero not liking it too much, and then sent his already galloping gait towards the blood bay and the tiny blonde haired girl.
they were almost to them, when another horse came into his vision. another bay thoroughbred! but by the excited way river noticed hero was acting, this thoroughbred was a mare. but that would only make sense. she was sleeker looking than a thoroughbred stallion. as the mare approached him and hero, she took a sniff of the gelding. then, she raced off after the stallion running now in the opposite direction. with a whinny, hero whirled around with rather surprising agility and ran back after the two bays, though he wasn't exactly as fast as them. but he did make it in a suitable amount of time. coming up to the two teams, hero whinnied back at the mare. it was more curious than anything.
they had came up to him, coming to a stop, when ira's agent went off the track. river looked at the two riders, a white, friendly smile on his face. "howdeh ther'!" he nodded at the small man and then tipped his hat towards the little blonde lady on the big stallion's back. then, in his deeply accented vocals, he said in concerned tones at lauren, "um, ma'am, i saw yer fall back there...are you real bad hurt? i didn't get tuh say nuthin' right then, 'cause hero here was actin' a fool." his hazel eyes were peering into hers with blunt worriedness. ah, well, he was just the type of person who DID care whether or not people in general were okay after a bad fall like that. thank goodness she had a helmet on!

GAVE INTO LOVE & WATCHED THE BITTERNESS BURN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Lauren had been helpless in trying to avoid attention after recently thrown off her arrogant stallion. Her hands fidgeted the reins, her head down to never meet anyone’s meandering gaze. Doctor walked beneath her silently. His ears fully turned back to listen to what may come out of her mouth. Though his heart had sunken due to his recent outburst. Would his Lauren forgive him? She just had to. After all, Lauren only had one horse, and taking in another horse was the last thing on her mind. Well, besides a filly or colt to keep Doctor calm, but getting another horse when she had her hands full with Doctor was unthinkable and possibly suicide if she got another stallion. Doctor snorted as the silence dragged on, trying to get Lauren to say something instead of fidgeting with the reins. He could feel them against his muscular neck, tickling the hairs at his withers. He whinnied and tossed his head before returning to the silence. Lauren gave a quiet laugh, and Doctor’s ears pricked forwards. His right eye turned back to briefly see the smile across his Lauren’s pale pink lips. His heart rose within his chest, and he nickered, shaking his head. She gave him a gentle pat on his neck, but withdrew her wounded arm back to her side tightly. It was soon afterwards that a mare pressed against Doctor’s side. A nicker had followed and Doctor’s ears pinned tightly against his skull. He side-stepped to the side, and snorted harshly at the mare, caught off guard by the approach of another equine.
Now, now. That’s enough of that. She stated calmly at Doctor as he pulled at the bit. Last thing she wanted was another tantrum; however a voice caught her attention. Of course, she should have known. Where there was a horse, there was a rider. She turned her eyes to view a male upon the mare and she smiled at him. He removed his helmet and Lauren was fascinated at the coloring of his eyes. She had a bit of a thing for eyes, and his was nicely and uniquely colored. She bit her bottom, lip hoping he hadn’t seen her fall, but he hadn’t brought it up. She smiled at him once more before replying. It’s okay. Doctor’s a bit of a crazy one as well. She spoke lightly, and had noticed Doctor’s muscles hardened beneath her seat. If the rider was a female, he would be calm, but the rider was a male. He snorted, trying to pull away but Lauren had simply reminded who was boss. Clearly unhappy, he tossed his head, whickering but he would not disobey the precious cargo he had upon his back. When the mare named London whinnied, Doctor could not help but turn and look to see what she was whinnying at. A man came upon the turf, and Lauren looked at the man who seemed unhappy by this. It was fairly impossible to pay attention to something else so they could have their private conversation. She caught it all, and just when she was debating to trot Doctor away the man left and Ira still remained. She looked at him carefully, observing his face to search for an expression of some sort, but finding none she looked at the back of Doctor’s neck. She digested some information that had been given. The man sounded like an agent, and that meant one thing. The rider of the mare was indeed famous. She thought long and hard, and then it slowly came to her. She recognized him from a race she had seen before. He placed second at the Breeder’s Cup. Huh. Lauren exhaled, and though it was meant to be kept to herself, it was said aloud in a thought almost shocked way. She refused to say anything about it though, and was almost relieved and grateful that he spoke, apologizing to her.
Oh, it’s fine. I’m Lauren. Lauren spoke with a smile still to her lips. Sure, she was presented with some reasonably famous, but he was still a person. And Lauren intended to treat him as such instead of acting like some stupid, screaming fan girl. Her eyes then turned back to Doctor as he nickered, but she was distracted by something. The press made him sound like a jerk out of hell, but Lauren refused to judge him on what she saw on TV. Which reminded her, she would have to pay a visit to her father to talk about the races they saw. Her father mainly followed this boy, enthusing constantly on how good he raced, and of course, that was in his spare time seeing as his work was training thoroughbreds for numerous people that were both reasonably well-known and just starting out. She was drawn away from her thoughts to the now approaching man and his gelding. As they came closer and closer, Lauren turned her eyes down to Doctor’s neck once more. She refused to look up at the man beside her, or even towards the noise of galloping hooves against the dirt turf. That was until she heard a thick accent. She looked up calmly and smiled at the man as he greeted them. She watched him tip his hat at Ira before he did the same to her. Lauren gave a gentle tip of her head as well in response, even though she was wearing a helmet, but she didn’t mind at how possibly stupid she looked. Hey. She knew who she was, and they shouldn’t get any less.
Lauren was observing him when his accented voice broke the still air. His voice showed he was clearly concerned and she exhaled inaudibly. He had seen her minor accident, and her cheeks grew a little red. Her gaze dropped to her blood bay stallion before lifting them to meet the country man’s eyes once more. She laughed a little nervously before responding. I’m alright. Doctor knows I don’t break so easily, so I’m okay. Thank you for being considerate, but I’m fine really. She smiled almost weakly at his worried gaze, but it was strong enough to assure him she was fine. Lauren knew that the blood was beading on her arm, but it was only stinging. She looked down to check her arm, gently twisting it so she could get a better look. One hand grasped onto the reins, and her stallion snorted harshly towards the gelding and his rider. His ears pinned flat against his skull and he whickered. Lauren’s eyes inspected the wound on her arm carefully. It was bleeding reasonably, but it wasn’t so bad. She’d wash it off when she decided to return to the stables. Then she’d be as good as new. She put it back to her side, not caring if either of them saw. She was tough, whether they’d like to think so or not. Doctor attempted to rear, but Lauren assertively put him back in his place once more. And he whinnied loudly in defiance, but Lauren lifted her voice above his. Enough, Doctor. She spoke to him directly, her voice stern and Doctor quieted himself only slightly. Though, he nickered stubbornly in response. He’d make sure the gelding and the two men never got near Lauren, considering the fact that he thought she was his. She smiled at them apologetically. Sorry about Doctor’s outbursts. She said, turning her gaze away from them to Doctor who now tugged at the bit. She gave a firm tug back and he settled under her, his muscles tensing much more than before when there was only one male he had to worry about.
