imagine a future moment in your
life where all your dreams come true .
ays had faded into weeks, and her routine remained the same. But she desperately craved a thrill, a rush that would be indescribable to nothing she had felt before. Green eyes shot to the left in a nervous and almost suspicious manner. The faint sounds of her visiting mother came from her left. And with her body cloaked in the darkness that lingered, the seventeen year old girl walked the short hallway of her apartment. Her black English boots making no sound as she finally reached where the open space of her living room and kitchen lay. Everything was incredibly barren than most expected, but being seventeen and living on one’s own wasn’t anything short of a miracle. She walked the short distance to her door, but to her, it had felt longer than a couple of seconds. Her heart had raised its heart beat, and as her small and fragile hand left her side and clasped the cold door knob – she smiled. Her face brightening, and she glanced up and a sliver of the moon’s glow caught onto her tan skin. Her pale pink lips shadowed by her blond wavy hair. Her green eyes sparking with mischievousness, and before she could talk herself out of it, the door opened and she stepped purposefully out the door.D
Skylar Lisar jogged down the steps with ease. Reaching the door that separated her from her temporary confinement stood defiantly before her. Her short five foot frame moved stubbornly towards the only obstacle standing in her way. Her beige riding pants conforming to her every rushed movement she created with her toned legs. And then suddenly, when she pushed down on the door, it gave way. The gust of the autumn wind greeted her and played with her hair, and the green sweater that conformed to her body blew in the wind. Once stepping out of the warm place, she gazed at the moon above her that highlighted the still town. It cast an eerie feeling that this place had suddenly turned desolate in a matter of hours. Despite the anxiety that tugged at her heart, she ignored it and pressed forwards. Avoiding all main roads, she walked as a lone figure with no one beside her. Skylar never had friends, and most never stuck around to get to know her which had caused her to grow withdrawn from all social activities. But despite all this, there must have been something to cause this girl to have no friends. And in fact there was. Skylar was born deaf, you could never tell just by looking at her though if the wind blew just right you could see her hearing aids hooked onto her ears. Being in Shady Lane for longer than four months, she remained alone, but she was used to the silence and peace of just her thoughts.
The stables came into view, and having took trails to come here, she gazed at the white fencing. Approaching its frame, she climbed it and jumped over it with ease. Landing in the dirt, she continued to walk in the darkness to remain concealed and alone. Walking in the empty pasture she constantly looked back over her shoulder, feeling as though someone might have been following her. But always spotting no other figure, she collected herself before jumping the fence and walking along the stables parking lot to the doors. The bitter wind slapped against her, tousling her hair but she didn’t care for appearances. Looks were only skin deep. Opening the side door that stable hands often used, she walked in and shut the door behind her. It was warmer in here, and though it was dimly lit, she could easily spot the general place in which her two horses were stabled. Calmly, she called out to them. Her voice was steady and gentle, though sounded different to any hearing person’s ears. Serenade. Lady. And with that, two heads rose from their relaxed posture and became immediately alert at the sound of their master’s voice.
Skylar heard her gray Lusitano cross-breed nickered worriedly whilst her rarely colored Appaloosa x Friesian mare eagerly waited for what she had in store. She walked to them with a gentle smile on her face, and she looked at them, spotting their eyes only faintly. She stroked both of their faces before stepping back a little. How about we have a little fun? She inquired and they were both up for it. Unlatching both of their stall doors simultaneously, she watched as they both pranced out in their glory. Lady was taller than Serenade by being 16 hands while Serenade was 15.3 hands. Skylar smiled, and without the use of any lead rope or halter, began to walk with both her mares beside her. She placed a hand on Serenade’s shoulder, feeling her muscles work beneath her gray coat. And though Lady seemed oblivious to this, she craved to have the same done to her. With only the sound of their hooves surrounding her, Skylar felt more at ease with everything. No longer on her guard, she reached the arena gate, and with no hesitation at all she had opened it and closed it when both her mares were inside. She cleared her throat quietly, and they both gazed at her. Serenade was no longer green, and though the months of training were grueling, Skylar had gotten through to her. Smiling when both of them turned and gave their undivided attention, she began. She directed them with merely her small and delicate hands. They looked back constantly to make sure she had not changed her order. Skylar uttered not a word, and let her hands do the talking.
She flicked her wrists, and her mares responded by turning around. Lady was on the right of the arena, and Serenade on the left. And in the middle stood two individual jumps. One was higher and that one was for Lady, and for Serenade whom was just beginning to understand the mere basics of ground work and the English discipline had the smaller. Their eyes were devoted and on her petite frame, and she leaned forwards only slightly which sent both of them into a collected canter. Lady’s canter was professional while Serenade’s was a little sloppy, but Skylar gave her credit. She was trying and that was all that mattered. Mentally, Skylar counted the strides between her horses and the jumps, and she smiled calmly as they both reached the jumps at the same time. They jumped and landed one after the other. She grinned, and though she wasn’t finished, she allowed them to circle on their own. She had stopped Serenade, and still with her hands, told her to move to the far left corner of the arena. She remained there, while she turned her attention fully on Lady. Lady slowed into a walk once more when she recognized the signal, and moved around the jumps set up in the arena. When her hands told Lady to gain speed, she responded instantly. Her black and white leopard coat moving gracefully across the arena’s turf and she cleared each jump according to Skylar’s instructions. The bond between horse and rider seemed like no other, and having trained them to respond to her hand signals most could never believe. However, most never saw Skylar at work, and in fact, most never saw her ride. A loner she was, nothing more and certainly nothing less.
