With the world in shambles there are a few different factions seeking the power to shape the world as they see fit. With the diametric opposition between them, violence often erupts and leaves as many allies dead as enemies. Alchemy has all but faded from memory, those with knowledge of it hiding it even as they seek further knowledge, often fearful of being used by those on either side of the continued conflicts- or the targets. With the death of so many alchemists during the previous wars it almost seems that they were a myth of technology. The few alchemists that do exist are nearly powerless, those whom shared the soul power with them dead or hiding for nearly the same reasons, which makes alchemy even more rare.
On one side stands the world of the corporations, those wealthy and lucky enough to hold what was left of the electrical generators, water supplies and farmland to use it as leverage over others. Moderately comfortable in a world where children starve they seek to again establish themselves more deeply. Not all of them may have the most evil goals but most are ruthless in chasing higher station and power. Dante, having her hands in every resource, has a bit of a claim on everyone and uses it to further her own shadowy ends.
On the other side stand those of the rebellion who remember a world where the government served the people rather than the other way around. A good deal of these fighters are members of the former military before they were disbanded. Most are filled with pain and rage at the world as it seems now and look no further than tearing down that which put them into this situation- though there are a few with a vision of the future to order their actions.
At this time the idea of peace seems to be a very dim light indeed- survival, pure and simple continuation into the next generation and even the next day, has become the overwhelming motivation for most. Those seeking more permanent solutions are either comfortable enough to have the time for such thoughts or those so obsessed with the world before that they have no choice but to strive for it in this one. Both choices could lead to destruction- or potenial ressurection.
They say that the world will end in 2012- and at this point it is quite likely. But will it prevail as a world reborn into better hands or simply crash into oblivion, leaving behind not a trace? The year has just started. Do they have a chance? Isn't that the question one always asks before something so large is undertaken?
Hope is faint, but it is there.
